Bio Sketch

Born in 1981 at Parigam, Pulwama, Kashmir, I did my schooling form Government High School Parigam and Higher Secondary School Khanda. Completed my Bachelors degree from SP College Srinagar before moving to Department of Biochemistry, University of Kashmir for my post graduation. Then I joined Prof. Namita Surolia at JNCASR, as a project fellow. In this part of my training we were able to decipher the key aminoacid residues in Plasmodium falciparum fabG protein responsible for interactions with ACP protein. Then I did my doctorate with Dr. Stefan Dimitrov at University Joseph Fourier, France. During my PhD, We resolved the structure of Chromatosome by using Cryo electron microscopy, Hydroxyl radical foot-printing, Coarse-grain DNA mechanics and X-ray crystallography. In my post doctoral research with Dr. Dimitar Angelov at ENS Lyon, we studied the mechanism of chromatin remodelling by ATP dependent remodelling complexes and how histone variants interact with linker histone.  In year 2012, I joined CSIR-IIIM, Jammu as a Scientist Fellow and at present am working as a senior scientist at CSIR-IIIM Branch laboratory Srinagar. My current focus of research is drug discovery using small chemical compounds. Apart from research, I like to play badminton and travel around.

Area of Expertise

Area of Expertise

  • Phosphodiesterases are a group of druggable enzymes implicated in the onset or progression of many clinical manifestations. We have been working on the discovery of specific and novel compounds which could be developed as lead molecule/s.
  • G9A is a histone lysine methyltransferase (mono, di and tri methylation of H3K9) linked with both facultative and constitutive heterochromatin formation and transcriptional repression. Inhibition of G9a activity has been found to induce autophagy, apoptosis and senescence in different types of cancer. We are working to discover novel inhibitors of G9a and explore their anticancer activity.
  • Sickle cell anaemia is a genetic disorder with only limited remedies to manage the patho-physiological symptoms of the disease. Such patients face acute systemic painful vaso-occlusive crisis. An elevated level of fetal γ-globin has been found to delay such episodes. We are working on to discover novel compounds capable of inducing the fetal γ-globin.

Project Involved / Ongoing Projects

Projects

  1. CSIR Mission Mode Project on Sickle Cell Anaemia
  2. Discovery of new natural product based chemotype inhibitors for histone methyl transferase G9A and their role in cancer therapy and stem cell biology
  3. Glycoengineering of Nicotiana tabacum using CRISPR Cas based genome editing: Glyco-optimization for humanized therapeutic protein production in plants
