Dr. Zabeer Ahmed, Director, CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, Jammu, completed his Ph.D. from Kashmir University and started his career as a Junior Scientist, and elevated to the position of Chief Scientist at CSIR-IIIM, Jammu, before taking charge as Director. He has made significant scientific contributions in the field of inflammatory and metabolic disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus, and obesity, with more than 28 years of research experience in drug discovery. He has more than 150 research articles in peer-reviewed journals in the field of inflammatory pharmacology and cancer, along with many international and national patents for the molecules evaluated for their anti-inflammatory properties, including rheumatoid arthritis. As of now, 12 Ph.D. and 60 postgraduate students have graduated under his mentorship and are positioned as post-doctoral fellows in reputed universities.
His scientific contribution has been recognized with awards like the ‘Knowledge Partnership Award of CSIR’ and the ‘JK Union Territory Level Award for Excellence in Science and Technology’. In the research field of inflammatory and metabolic disorders, his lab has identified three phytopharmaceutical leads for rheumatoid arthritis; one is at Phase I clinical trial, two molecules have completed pre-clinical IND studies, and are in the phase of IND application filing to proceed for Phase I clinical trial. In addition, he has developed an herbal-based formulation for diabetes mellitus, and the technology has been transferred.
He is Mission Director for “Phytopharmaceutical Mission Phase III,” which aims to identify a phytopharmaceutical lead with potential safety, efficacy, and quality assurance, fostering their integration into modern healthcare systems. He is leading the CSIR Societal Missions (Aroma and Floriculture) in the region. Under his visionary leadership, the Institute is advancing groundbreaking research in phytopharmaceuticals, NCEs, and Nutraceuticals, with one promising candidate each for pancreatic cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and Alzheimer’s disease, progressing toward clinical development.
