Mrs. Urmila Jamwal
Principal Technical Officer
Fermentation and Microbial Biotechnology Division
CSIR – Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine,Canal Road, Jammu – 180001
I joined this prestigious organization in the year 1983, starting research activities with silvicultural practices. And as per the the requirement of the department, research activities were initiated with medicinal and aromatic plants viz. A. calamus, S. marianum, C. asiatica, etc.which resulted in 5 related publications. And then plant enzymes namely peroxidise, lipase, and esterase of W. somnifera were worked out that resulted in 2 further publications.
Finally, started working for the isolation screening of microbes for active bio-pharmaceutical molecules and enzymes. A cost effective formulation was developed at fermentation level (500 L) using B. Sphaericus, and technology was given to Shri Biotech, Hyderabad.

Area of Expertise
Researched on silvicultural practices for the improvement of the biomass production of fast growing tree species was initiated withe introduction of L. leucosphaela, from Hawaii seeds, S. sesban, M. aziderach, P. deltoids and P. caribeae, etc. As a result, bioproducivity was increased through use of biofertilizers, and chemical fertilizers and development of better silvicultural practices resulted in 19 publications and revenue of more than 1 lakh rupees was generated through sale of L. lecusphaela and S. sesban to different social forestry departments.
