Profile

Bio Sketch

Dr Debaraj Mukherjee received his MSc (Organic Chemistry) from Calcutta University in 1999 and his PhD degree in oligosaccharide synthesis from CSIR-IICB (registered under Jadavpur university Kolkata) in 2006. Since 2006, Dr Mukherjee has been working as scientist at CSIR-IIIM Jammu, India. Presently, he is Principal Scientist & Head of Natural Product and Bio-Organic Chemistry division. He worked with Professor David Crich (2011-2012) at Wayne State University USA under DST-Boyscast exchange program on mechanistic study on relative kinetic rates on cation clock glycosylation reaction.

The research of Dr Mukherjee group deals with Carbohydrate, Medicinal and Natural Product Chemistry. His major interest in glycoscience include total synthesis, novel methods for O-/C-/N-glycosylation, glycal chemistry, new protection/deprotection strategies, multicomponent tandem reactions and synthesis of carbohydrate-fused bicyclic systems containing medium-ring to macro cyclic ethers, thio-ethers and lactones, synthesis of nucleosides, noninfringing routes for carbohydrate based API synthesis. He has significantly contributed in the generation of several lead molecules of therapeutic importance from natural product origin.

He is recipient of several awards like D.S.T award for ‘Participation in the meeting of Nobel Laureates’ in Lindau, Germany (2002), Young Scientist Award in International Carbohydrate Conference at Delhi university (2006), Professor D.K. Banerjee Memorial Lecture Award at IISC Bangalore (2020) for his outstanding research work in the field of carbohydrate chemistry.
