Research Area

  • Plant-Microbe interactions in Crocus sativus L. (Saffron): I am undertaking research on Plant-microbe interactions in Crocus sativus L. In this project we are investigating the endophytic biodiversity, both bacterial and fungal, associated with the Saffron plant and explore them for plant growth promoting properties to understand the benefits that the plant is deriving from endophytism.  We are also trying to understand the molecular interactions between the endophytes and the host, and how these interactions affect the key metabolic pathways in the two symbiotic partners. Our aim is to establish useful plant-microbe associations in Saffron to improve the growth, adaptation and key metabolite content of the plant. Similar work is being carried out on some other medicinal/economically important plants.

  • Bioprospecting of endophytes for bioactive natural products: My research focuses on establishment of a repository of novel microorganisms, particularly endophytes for isolation and characterization of bioactive molecules including Volatile Organic Compounds. These organisms are obtained from extreme environments with plants bearing endemism, ethnobotanical applications and strong botanical biodiversity. Our rationale is based on the fact that certain microbes, selected from their natural ecological settings, may provide new and useful leads for industrial, medicinal and agricultural product discovery. The microbes are screened for antimicrobial, anti-cancer and immune suppressant activities. The endophytes are taxonomically characterized with conventional and molecular phylogeny. The bioactive compounds are purified and characterized. Potential bioactive microorganisms are selected for strain development to produce novel molecules.


Figure 1: Endophytic biology is studied with the aim of Bioprospecting for genuine microbial products, potential host metabolites and industrially important Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) or to understand the principles of endophytism and its consequences on the secondary metabolism of the partners as well as adaption of the plant host to biotic and abiotic stress conditions.

  • Development of molecular methods for the detection of foodborne pathogens: I am also undertaking work on Development of PCR and real-time PCR based assays for the detection of foodborne pathogens. We have developed real-time PCR assays for the detection of Salmonella, Shigella, Escherichia coli, Shigatoxin producing E. coli, Aspergillus flavus/A. parasiticus and Hepatitis B in our lab. The reactions were validated on the micro-PCR system fabricated by our collaborators. Further, protocols were devised for rapid and culture-independent detection of these pathogens in milk.
