Working principle: Most of the compounds show absorption in the infra-red region of the electromagnetic spectrum. This absorption depends on the type of bonds present in the molecule. The absorption spectrum from the bond natural vibration frequencies indicates the presence of various chemical bonds and functional groups present in the sample. This technique is particularly useful for finding range of functional groups, side chains and cross links involved which has characteristic vibration frequency in infra-red range.
