Background:

Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) is a hilly state having varied topography and great diversity in cultural, social and economic practices of its different regions. However, agriculture remains the backbone of the economy of Jammu and Kashmir, as over 65 percent of its population depends on agriculture and allied sectors. These sectors contribute around 27 percent to the State's economy.

The diversity in physiographic features, agro-climatic variations at macro and micro level, existence of cold arid, temperate, intermediate and sub-tropical zones within a geographical area of 2.22 lakh km2, speaks volumes about the vast agricultural potential in the State.

Though, the large diversity in agro-climatic conditions of the state is conducive for propagation of diversified farming system, the terrain at the same time is tough and accessibility to a greater part of the region is poor. This causes a lot of hurdles to the inhabitants. As a result it has vast areas of land which remain unutilized, and wherever organized cultivation is being done, it is only performed with traditional crops. These cultivators like rice and paddy do not provide adequate revenue to the farmers, who are now at the verge of leaving traditional farming for better returns.

Cultivation and Processing of Medicinal and Aromatic plants based on CSIR technologies, is expected to provide enhanced income and new employment opportunities in rural sector of Jammu & Kashmir.

Jammu and Kashmir is an Indian state that has been endowed with boundless natural beauty and unique cultural environment. The state is security sensitive also as it shares international boundary with neighbouring countries i.e. Pakistan and China. The state has snow-clad mountains, large natural lakes, forests, rivers, springs and enjoys pleasant weather almost throughout the year. It comprises three main natural regions, namely, Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.

The J&K divided into 22 districts and they are-districts of Jammu, Kathua, Udhampur, Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Reasi, and Samba in Jammu Division and Srinagar, Budgam, Anantnag, Pulwama, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kulgam and Shopian in Srinagar Division and Kargil and Leh in Ladakh Region

Low productivity in agriculture and allied sectors has impeded employment and income generation. Therefore there is an urgent need for implementation of S&T initiatives for the farmers of the region.

The slow growth of the state of Jammu and Kashmir can be attributed to various factors. Poor industrial infrastructure along with the poor investment climate has left the industrial sector in its infant stage. There has not been a suitable strategy for the potential sectors to achieve higher economic growth. Lack of fiscal management has also been responsible for the poor economic growth of the state.

Jammu and Kashmir is one of those states in the country where both the demographic situation and level of socio-economic development remains far from satisfactory. Its geographical area is 222,236 sq. km., with a share of 6.76 per cent of the country’s size.

To encourage and help the farmers CSIR-IIIM will provide free of cost Quality Planting Material for half an acre land to registered farmers. Training programmes are also purposed in the project to train and aware the farmers, growers and entrepreneurs for the cultivation processing and marketing of produce output by the farmers.  A proper plan for the survey, to educate the farmers about MAPs cultivation, processing and marketing aspects is chalked out.
